Exploring the Island - Off Resort

Life outside of the Rendezvous Couples Resort can be an incredibly rewarding experience, just as long as you know where to go. If you’re looking to get the feel of real St. Lucia life, locations near Rendezvous resort like Point Seraphine, the Cathedral, Derek Walcott Square, and the Castries Market provide great opportunities to do just that!

All four of these St. Lucia sites are just about a ten minute drive from the Rendezvous Couples Resort and are great for sightseeing, photo opportunities and pretty much getting to know what the people, and the island are all about.

The Castries Market:

Recently highlighted as one of the Top Ten Food Markets in the National Geographic, the Castries Market offers real chaotic charm. In their own words: “Scruffy and chaotic or orderly and refined, the world’s street markets offer fresh, local—and often cheap—seasonal produce, alongside a slice of local life.”

We’ll leave you to guess which of these descriptions befits the Castries Market, but if you have a look around, you’ll find this is a good place to purchase anything from souvenirs for home, to spices, fruits, and signature St Lucian condiments. Of course most of these items can be purchased elsewhere, like the hotel gift shop, or perhaps from a local shopping plaza, so if you’re going to the Castries market, go for the experience.

Point Seraphine:

This Duty Free Shopping Plaza is minutes away from the city center, so if your taxi drops you off in Castries you can simply breeze on over to Point Seraphine, enjoying the view of the Castries Habour along the way. It’s about a ten minute walk from Castries. There’s also the opportunity to take a ferry (water taxi) over to Point Seraphine from the Vendor’s Arcade in the city. There are shopping opportunities to be found at Point Seraphine and stores include jewelry, souvenir and clothing spots. There are also some good places to eat at this shopping plaza.

Tip: If you catch a ferry to get there, find out what time the next ferry leaves to get back into Castries, or where you can get a taxi to go directly back to Rendezvous, back into Castries, or to your next location!

Derek Walcott Square:

Named after one of St Lucia’s two Nobel Laureates, the Derek Walcott Square is located in Central Castries. It’s a great place to take pictures, or catch a breather when spending the day exploring the city. Places nearby include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Central Library.

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception:

You don’t have to be a history buff to truly appreciate the grandeur of the Cathedral. Tooted as the largest church in the Caribbean, this structure is a memorable one that commands the attention of all who stroll by. Don’t just stay on the outside and look in, venture inside and take in the architecture and design. The interior is decorated with a mural by the exceptionally talented St Lucian artist, Dunstan St Omer!
